Shocking Statistics:
  • Malnutrition causes 45% of Deaths in Children under the age of 5
  • There are 7.6 million Children Deaths per year
  • 20,000 children /day in developing countries are malnourished
  • 1 in 6 children or 100,000 million children go hungry
  • 1 in 4 children in the world are stunted
  • 80% live in just 20 countries
Cathy Henry of the St. Catharines South Rotary Club presented these chilling facts at this mornings meeting.  But as a Rotarian she also came with a unique idea that her club has been sponsoring to help eradicate these statistics in countries like Jamaica and Pakistan.
The Breadfruit tree is a tropical plant that can produce 450 lbs of fruit in just one growing season. It can be cooked in many ways and even made into flour for bread and puddings.  It grows in tropical areas where most world wide child malnourished children are.
Cathy's Organization  'Trees that Feed Foundation' provides trees, and equipment to schools in Jamaica. This is used to support a school breakfast program, that encourage attendance and learning.
